2010 in Review

2010 was a weird year for me, though I couldn’t really explain why. This year made me very nostalgic. Probably because for a few months all I said was that it was the 10-year anniversary of Y2K. Somewhere around July or so I ventured into my basement to look for some old game discs. I came out with three, Ultima 8, Whiplash, and Hyperman. I also found another old game I used to play on a website called Abandonia. The game itself is called Vigilance on Talos V. I want to create videos going somewhat in-depth about the games, but I find myself at a loss for words when it comes to scripting. Another thing is that I feel sort of like George McFly from Back to the Future, “I just don’t think I could take that kind of rejection…”. Well, that, and acting like an idiot by myself when other people can hear me makes me chicken out.

I also dropped out of college earlier this year, and I am now thinking about going back. Instead of majoring in IT, I’m going to go for Audio and Video Production. Mostly just so I can more efficiently make internet videos. I’ve become inspired by such internet celebrities as The Angry Video Game Nerd, the Nostalgia Critic, Spoony, Linkara, Bennett the Sage, and Angry Joe. Though I realize most of their material comes from bad things that piss them off, and the humor comes from either mocking it, or from their suffering.

And I’m officially out of things to talk about, so I’m abruptly ending it here. See you next year!

First Post in a LONG Time

Hello internets! How’s it going? Chances are, this is going to be my last post for another long time. So let me get to the point. Apparently Rhode Island recently made a select few small fireworks legal. Including sparklers, and those things you throw on to the ground and they go POP (among others). Tonight, me, my mom, and my sister lit off a few sparklers. I just wanted to share a picture that I took that turned out a lot better than any of us really expected.

Well THERE’S something I never expected. This makes sense I guess, there was a new jailbreak method released not too long ago, with a new iPhone unlock. Still, it’s weird searching on Google and finding my blog listed on the first page of results. I think I know of a way of getting even more hits…just post a bunch of crap entirely unrelated! People do it on YouTube all the time!

One Month Later…

It’s been almost a month since my last post, so I’ll just get to the point. I’ve been in college (so I have a legitimate excuse this time!), and so far, it’s pretty cool. It’s a lot like High School during finals week, i. e. we get to leave when we’re done. And we get a break around the middle of class, so it seems even shorter than it actually is. My schedule is something like this: M, T, Th, F I have a single class at at the same time everyday. Wednesday, I have a night class, and don’t get home until about 11:30. But, I’m used to it so… MEH.

On a side note, I got an iPhone! I was strongly considering getting an HTC Pure, with Windows Mobile 6.5, but I didn’t want to be locked in a 2-year contract with a shitty phone. Same price got me an iPhone 3GS 16GB. Actually, my Dad bought it, but I’m giving him some unused computer parts so he can build a MythTV setup. Something tells me he’s not ever going to get to it… that’s WoW for ya.

Gadget Update

Since my last post (as in, the one from August), I’ve added a few more gadgets to my arsenal. Well, 2 to be exact; the strangely named, Dingoo-A320, and an Xbox 360 Elite.

First up is the Dingoo, it’s being sold on ThinkGeek as the “Pocket Retro Game Emulator” or something like that. It costs $100 and comes with emulator software for various systems including NES, SNES, GBA, Neo-Geo, and CPS2 (whatever the hell that is). While it doesn’t come with a GameBoy/Color emulator, you can download a third-party emulator at dingoo-digital.com. There are a few bugs that need to be worked out of the firmware, most important is that you can’t use the Y and B buttons at the same time. The button layout is somewhat similar to the old SNES controller, D-Pad on the left, and A, B, X, Y buttons on the right. The “Select” and “Start” buttons are on the left and right sides of the screen, respectively. There are L and R buttons on top, but they are a pain to use and have a very loud click when pressed. On the bottom, there are left and right speakers, a mini-USB port, miniSD slot, and an AV-out port. It even came with an AV cable so you can plug it into your TV. That’s pretty much all I’ll say about the device; just one more thing though, the UI, and some built-in games, are loosely translated from chinese (and loosely is used generously here).

Xbox 360 Review is after the Break.

I got my Xbox 360 Elite only 3 days ago (as of this writing), and I already have fallen in love with it. I got it because, my parents bought a Wii, and while it’s pretty fun to play, I wanted to play video games the old way (i.e., sit on my ass on the couch in front of the TV and not move as much as possible). The games I have for it so far are, Crackdown, Viva Piñata, Castlevania: SOTN, and I might be getting Doom for it. I’ve been told by friends to NOT get Halo: ODST because it sucks. As for Xbox Live, I hate that you have to pay for it, I was able to get a special deal with 14 months for $50. My Live ID is “Ergosphere1″ if you want to add me as a friend (please?). It’s annoying that Microsoft took the HDMI cable out of the Elite bundle, I could’ve actually used it! Another thing that’s really annoying is the price of the Wi-Fi adapter, 100 f*cking dollars for something that costs maybe 10 to manufacture! But I found a way around that (but that’s a secret…sorta).

If you’re thinking of buying a 360, here are a couple of important things you should know.

1) The 360 is notorious for its failure rate. The newest systems use a “Jasper” motherboard, this MB has a greatly reduced failure rate than previous ones used. To check that yours has this MB look at the power supply (the huge thing on the power cord) and check the voltage. If it says “12.1V”, your system has the Jasper MB.

2) The console itself is really frickin’ loud. Some people describe it as sounding like a jet airliner at takeoff; and when the disc is spinning, that’s not too far off from the truth. But the wireless range on the controllers is such that, you can be pretty far away so you don’t have to listen to the noise it makes. Plus after a while, you kinda zone out the noise.

It’s been quite a long time since my last post (sort of). The reason for the big break is that my good old friends Procrastination and Apathy wanted to hang out with me a bit before I went back to school. For those that don’t know, I will be attending The New England Institute of Technology, and I will be majoring in Information Technology. At this point, I can’t tell if it’s going to be a long or short 3-4 years but we’ll see.

Changing the subject, I found out that I have 6 followers on Twitter, and I’ve never even made a single tweet. I don’t know if I’ll ever REALLY use it or not.

Getting Rid of the Top Ten List

This is a great app for people who are fans of the Guitar Hero/DDR genre of games. It’s pretty basic, just hit the glowing orbs as the pass through the circle at the bottom of the screen. There are 5 difficulty levels, Kids, Easy, Medium, Hard, and Extreme. There are a few songs to start with, but you can add more provided you have a connection to the internet from your device. Not all songs will be available for all difficulties (in fact, I don’t think any of them are), and some of the songs even have their own custom theme!

My Top Ten Favorite iPod Touch Apps Pt. 1

Ever since I got my iPod Touch, I’ve done almost everything you can think of to it. No not a durability test sort of thing, just jailbreaking and installing a bunch of apps Apple isn’t too fond of. I’ve even almost bricked it the day after I got it (I won’t tell you how). In this list I will provide the name, price, short description, and a screenshot of the app. Oh, and where to get it.

First off let me tell you how to get apps onto the device. You have two main options, Apple’s App Store, and Cydia. For the App Store, you first need an iTunes account (they’re free), next you just need to visit the App Store either from the device, or iTunes on your computer. When you click to install an app, you will need to input your account password for verification. Finally, the app will install. Cydia is very different, to even be able to get it, you will have to jailbreak your device (look it up on your own). Then it’s basically the same process just minus the iTunes account. Be careful though, there are apps on Cydia that can brick your device, so jailbreaking is recommended only for advanced users. Continue reading by clicking “Continue Reading blah blah blah…”

textPlus+ is a completely free texting app for both the iPhone and iPod Touch. Yes, FREE (with no strings attached)! It is very easy to set up, you just input a name that you think the receiving parties will recognise as you, enter their phone number, type out your message, and send away. What’s neat is that you can also give it your own cell phone # so that when the app is closed, you will still receive the message (you will still get charged for the message).

snes4iphone is just that, a Super Nintendo emulator for iPhoneOS (meaning, not JUST for the iPhone). For me, it’s hard to use the control layout because it’s just a touchscreen, there’s no feedback letting me know I just pushed a button, but I still find it fun. Getting the ROMs onto the iPod is a bit of a hassle at first, but then it became easy (I’m not going into how to do it). Visit Zodttd.com and click on wiki for more info.

#8 Pocket God

In this game, you are god of up to six Pygmies, and you can do a bunch of things to them. You can electrocute them with lightning, flick them into a volcano, get bird droppings on them, burn them, and a whole bunch of other things. It is able to use the accelerometer, so if you shake the device, it will cause an Earthquake. And if you tilt it…well you can guess at this point (I hope). It gets frequent updates from its developer and with each update, they add at least one new feature to the long list.

This app is straightforward, it’s a lightsaber, you swing your device and it will make lightsaber noises. From the idle hum to the clash with another saber. It’s the next best thing from those ForceFX Lightsabers.

#6 ICHC Pro

Price: $0.99

Get it from: App Store

The name stands for “I Can Has Cheez Burger”, it’s a site where people add captions to their cat pictures with humorous results (they are usually spelled in a way that would make an English teacher cry). This app is just a way for people to access the pictures from ICHC and its numerous branches (my favorite is FailBlog). it gives you options to change site, save image, and even submit an image right from your device! Oh, and the “Pro” labeling is to distinguish it from the free version of the app, which has ads.

I’m sorry I haven’t posted in a while, I don’t really have an excuse for it, I was just lazy. But here’s something interesting, guess where I’m posting this from? My brand new iPod Touch! I’m still getting used to it, but so far I’ve installed a bunch of apps, as well as jailbroken it. What’s really coll is that there is an app for wordpress. Not that it was surprising, I just think it’s cool that I don’t need to open up safari to post something. It’s also almost 2:00 here so good night for now people!
